In reaction to a thread on Reddit, Google Browse Supporter John Mueller states there’s no inherent SEO benefit to utilizing WordPress compared to coding a site yourself.
A thread in the r/SEO forum asks a familiar concern lots of professionals face in their careers.
Is WordPress much better for SEO than coding your own site?
Other variations of that question consist of, “is WordPress much better for SEO than Wix,” or, “is WordPress much better for SEO than [insert CMS here]”
No matter how you ask it, the response is constantly the same.
WordPress isn’t naturally better for SEO than any other option. It’s one of lots of methods to develop a site that ranks in Google.
Mueller On WordPress For SEO
In reaction to whether utilizing WordPress is better for SEO than coding your own website, Mueller states:
“Not for SEO, however you can focus more on the material if you do not invest all your time developing a new CMS on your own. (some people choose making a CMS, so YMMV).”
As Mueller says, the most substantial benefit WordPress offers is the ease of use compared to manually composing code.
However, that’s only helpful to the website owner. It makes no difference to Google if a website is built with WordPress.
This concern shows up often and is worth reviewing due to the misinformation circulating around WordPress and SEO.
For example, take the second-most upvoted comment in the Reddit thread straight below Mueller’s.
A specific claims, “Google understands WordPress well,” as though Googlebot can crawl WordPress websites more effectively than other CMSs.
That’s incorrect, though the misconception of WordPress being much better for SEO continues to continue.
